     So Many Accidents …..

  1. Slip and fall accidents are the second leading cause of accidental deaths

  2. Slip and falls are the number one cause of accidental injuries in hotels, restaurants and public buildings.

  3. The Strait Times: In the first seven months of this year (2012), hospitals A&E department treated 1,734 people aged 65 and over for falls. Of this, 6 in 10 occurs at home. Other places of fall are in public toilets, walkways and pavements.

 

Combating Falls (Article below quoted from Singapore Health Promotion Board)

 Falls are the major cause of non-fatal injury around the world. Among older persons, the risk of falling is significantly higher than younger adults and the consequences of falls can be severe. It is estimated that people above the age of 65 have the highest death rate from injuries. This article explains why older persons are more prone to falls and what you can do to reduce the risks.

Environmental Reasons:

  • Uneven, loose and slippery surfaces

  • Unsecured carpets, rugs

  • Loose cords and wires

  • Inadequate lighting

  • Poor step and stairway design

  • Chairs and beds that are too high or too low

  • Inappropriate footwear

  • Inappropriate eyewear
